Miss Woodhouse's Musings

…about life, the universe, and everything. Don't panic!

Droid Wars

My mum and I have the same cell phone- the HTC Hero. I, being the tech geek, set mine up in the store much to the amazement of the salespeople. (Who, by the way, have never seen anyone type as fast as I on an onscreen keyboard. I don’t know whether to be flattered or chagrined.) Mum is now being dragged reluctantly by me into the 21st century.

We had fun. I thought I’d make you all jealous and do a little live blogging of the highlights. :)

9:00– M: Let’s go to Dairy Queen instead. E: No, we need to do this now.

*Unfortunately Mum hasn’t used iTunes in a while, so it had to update. This took fffoooorrreeeeevvveeeeerrrr.*

9:15– *update finished* M: Okay, let’s find some Chad and Jeremy. E: *looks up icanhascheezburger.com*

9:30– E: Okay, the most difficult thing we have to do is set up your Google account for the Android Market. M: Okay!

9:33– M: It needs my first name. What should I put? E: Whatever name you want. M: Okay, we’re going with A— (her name begins with K). E: Sounds great.

9:35– M: Now it wants a last name. What last name should I use? E: Whatever you want. M: How about Gugenheim? E: … M: Guteman? E: …what about *insert our real last name here* M: Oh! That’ll work too!

9:48– M: Why do I even need a Google account anyway? E: *holds up the back of the phone that reads “with Google.” M: Oh, that would be why.

10:00– *We’ve finally gone through the 500 steps to set up a Google account, downloaded a word game, and Ringdroid. We’ve decided on what song to use as her default ring. We even set up her default ringtone. So far, so good. Then, we decided to personalize the ringtone for when I call.*

10:05– M: Okay, Cuppa Joe, Since I Quit Drinking Coffee, or Java Jive. E: You pick. M: But what song to you want to be identified with? E: I think you should pick.

*We play all three songs multiple times through with multiple artists trying to find the right one. We finally land on “Cuppa Joe.”*

10:54– M: Cuppa joe….cuppa joe….no, cuppa joe- right here. *points to a picture of a cup of coffee on her laptop wallpaper*

10:56– M: I have a missed call. E: That was me from the test call earlier.

10:58– M: Do we have any Peeps? I want to make some sh’mos since we can’t go to Dairy Queen. Don’t blog that. E: :)

11:07– M: The song is still playing, how do I make it stop? E: A mallet.

11:10– M: You just talk into your phone and it does stuff for you! *imitates me from the other day* “Melting Pot…oh look, how cool* *notices my expression* M: Oh…

11:26– Success! Mum edited the song on her own, I called her, and it worked!

11:35– *listening to Michael Bolton singing Nessun Dorma* M: What is wrong with Nicolette Sheridon? How do you not love this?

11:38– E: Okay, connect your phone to the computer. M: It says it is. E: It isn’t really. M: Wait, my phone is lying to me! I can’t have a relationship with anything that lies to me. E: *facepalm*

11:40– M: I’m clicking music, I’m double clic…uh-oh. E: *facepalm* M: Honey, don’t die.

11:42– M: Hey, it takes me a long time, but once I’ve got it, I’ve got it.

11:43– M: You’re being snarky…sarcastic…snarkastic. Oh, I made a word- that’s good! Don’t bother with spellcheck…don’t blog this!

The Front Fell Off

To show that the oil spill is on my mind, I thought that I’d share one of my favourite videos. It’s only a few minutes, so enjoy!

Yes, I know that this video is not from this oil spill, and that it is not meant to be taken seriously. It’s still fun though!

Quick! Hide The Wool Sweaters!

Our moth hatched tonight. I’d love to give you the long, sweet story of how we hand-selected our cute little caterpillar, put it in the best corner of the house, and watched with loving attention for it to hatch out of its cocoon. However, I will not tell you that story.

Mainly because it doesn’t exist.

The real story goes something like “Look at this fat green caterpillar! Let’s catch it, put it in the old butterfly pavilion, and see what happens!”

Then, it spun itself into a cocoon.

….

….

….

….

Yep, after a few weeks of THAT MUCH ACTION, we put the pavilion in the garage. A few weeks later:

….

….

….

….

Let me tell you, it was riveting. So much so, we let it sit in the garage for a few more months. The other day we stumbled across it…erm, re-discovered its existence. Guess what had happened!

….

….

….

Yup, a creature of habit, that fat cocoon.

So, imagine our surprise when today of all days, we went to clean out the pavillion and found this!

Oops, a little blurry. Let’s try this!

Darn, still not good. Let’s see if we can get him/her/it to move:

Ahhh, much better! It’s hard to tell perspective in the bottom of the pavilion, so trust me when I tell you that this guy is a good 4 inches across at least. He’s big, and furry. Don’t believe me?

Told you so. And no, the photo isn’t blurry. He’s fuzzy.

So now, dear readers, I have a challenge for you. Can you identify what sort of a moth we have here? He’s been released into the wild, but for future reference we’d like to know. Leave your thoughts in the comments!

Footprints

This week’s Friday Frame-Up is from my trip to the beach on Monday. Enjoy!

One night I had a dream–
I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord
and across the sky flashed scenes from my life.
For each scene I noticed two sets of footprints,
one belonged to me and the other to the Lord.
When the last scene of my life flashed before me,
I looked back at the footprints in the sand.
I noticed that many times along the path of my life,
there was only one set of footprints.
I also noticed that it happened at the very lowest
and saddest times in my life.
This really bothered me and I questioned the Lord about it.
“Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you,
you would walk with me all the way,
but I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life
there is only one set of footprints.
“I don’t understand why in times when I needed you most,
you should leave me.”
The Lord replied, “My precious, precious child,
I love you and I would never, never leave you
during your times of trial and suffering.
“When you saw only one set of footprints,
it was then that I carried you.”

Don’t Mind If I Do!

What was that you were saying?

Oh, thanks! But, that picture is a little dark- is there a brighter way of getting this message across?

Fire!

Works for me. :)

We’ll be back to regularly scheduled, slightly more lucid programming after the celebration!

Frappyhour

This Tuesday was the official rollout of Starbucks’ new however-you-want-it frappuccino. Many customers have asked us just what is different about the new process, so here we go!

The old recipe used to be 3 steps: dispense based (creme or coffee), add in syrups, add in ice and blend. The only problem was that we were pretty much limited when it came to special dietary needs. We couldn’t use soy or be vegan, for example. So, Starbucks broke it down for us.

If you want coffee, we put that in first- we can even make it decaf! Then, we put in any milk you want: soy, non-fat, 1%, 2%, whole, breve, heavy whipping cream, anything! If you want flavouring we put that in next- any syrup, any add-ins, any combination. The last ingredient we put in is the magic; it’s a thick binding liquid that gives it that great consistency and frappuccino taste.

Okay, now for the fun stuff! Because our normal store artist wasn’t working the night before rollout, yours truly had the opportunity to do the store’s main chalkboard. That’s right- my first promo board! My District Manager even complimented our Store Manager on it.

Here are some of the first pictures- I’m hoping to get some better ones of the updated board. Yes, I tweaked. How could I not?

I’ll post some more pictures soon!

So, now to the explanation of this blog title. Starting yesterday, and running through May 16th, you can come in from 3-5 pm and get any frappuccino in any size for half off! Mum and Dad came in to visit during “happy hour” and Dad called it, “frappy hour.” Now, it stuck (and it’s part of the improvements I made to the board).

As a last note, we have new coffee gear! We love our cute, new, blue aprons (pic of that to come too). However, the wrist bands are a little puzzling. In case you have sane baristas who refuse to wear them, here’s what they look like.

There’s no consensus as to why we have these. They are a health hazard, being so close to so many contaminates. We’ve compiled a list of possible reasons for the wrist bands. Let’s have some fun and try a poll: why do you think that Starbucks gave us these wristbands? Pick your top three, or suggest your own ideas!

Well, that’s all from me for now- I’ll be back with more pictures and stories of this crazy week very soon. Stay tuned, and thanks for reading!

Posy

I know that I’ve shared a picture of my puppy before, but it’s time for more! Today is her 9th birthday- I can’t believe that I’ve had her for so long.

We found her during a summer trip to “the land of no internet.” I had needed to put my old dog in a less active environment some time before, and I had been looking for a new puppy for some time. We saw an ad in the classified for Jack Russel/Standard Poodle puppies, so we drove quite some way into Amish country to take a look.

There were other puppies in the litter still there, but I fell in love with the little runt a few steps behind the others. She was also the only one who wasn’t acting like a maniac, and we needed a somewhat calm puppy. So, we brought her home! I knew that I wanted to name my puppy after the little Fossil girl in the book Ballet Shoes, and the name fit her perfectly.

It’s a good thing that she LOVES being photographed, because I take lots of pictures of her.

Happy Birthday, Posy!

5.5.2010

So, here’s my reasoning. 5+5=10. And 5+5+10=20. Therefore, 5.5.2010 deserves a special post. (I totally forgot that today is Cinco de Mayo- but that doesn’t concern my non-Spanish speaking self.) To mark this mathematically interesting day, I thought that I’d do some lists: my top 5 movies of all time, my 5 worst movies of all time, my 20 books that you MUST read, and my top 10 songs of all time. Let the counting begin!

Best Movies:

5. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

4. Two Week’s Notice

3. A&E Pride and Prejudice

2. Shadow of a Doubt

1. Relative Values

Worst Movies:

5. Murder, He said.. Interminable and insipid. To make a bad situation worse, it’s got this one character that sings a goofy little song through the movie, which gets stuck in your head for, say, ten years and counting.

4. The Long, Long Trailer. More like the long, long movie. I love Lucy and Desi, but this stretched my fandom too far.

3. You Can’t Take It With You. This might be a wonderful movie; unfortunately I can’t get past the fact that EVERYONE HAS TO YELL ALL THE TIME.

2. Life with Father. This is one uniquely talented director. He was given a great book, wonderful actors, and still he managed to produce a movie that sends me around the bend to even think about watching it again. Trust me, just read the book. You can thank me later.

1. It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. Five words: four hours of Ethel Merman. *hits head repeatedly into a brick wall*

Must-Read Books:

20. The Westing Game

19. The Tempest

18. The Cellist of Sarajevo

17. Elsie Dinsmore

16. Fahrenheit 451

15. Beautiful Girlhood

14. Destination Unknown

13. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

12. Jack and Jill

11. Rose in Bloom

10. Hamlet

9. Macbeth

8. Great Expectations

7. Little Women

6. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

5. Northanger Abbey

4. The Man in the Brown Suit

3. The Chronicles of Narnia

2. Lord of the Rings

1. Jane Eyre

Best Songs Ever!

10. Haven’t Met You Yet- Michael Buble.

9. Touchdown Turnaround- Hellogoodbye

8. I Can Only Imagine- MercyMe

7. Santa Maria- Gotan Project

6. Softly As I Leave You- Michael Buble

5. When It All Is Said and Done- Robin Mark

4. Hey There Delilah- Plain White Tees

3. I’m Not That Girl- Wicked, The Musical

2. Home- Michael Buble

1. Held- Natalie Grant
